The extreme marginalization of street children affects not only their economic conditions but their personality, their physical conditions, their reproductive health, their social behaviour. The experience of SARANALAYAM shows that the support for the reintegration of street children is only successful if it touches a variety of fields: education, family, job placement, psychology, health care, culture, etc and if it is based on an approach that takes into account the specific exclusion scenarioof street children.
There are thousands of children living in slums and on the streets of. Some are orphans, others are runaways escaping poverty, neglect or abuse. Street children can often be found roaming collecting rags or begging for money and sleeping under bridges or bus stations at night. They are frequently in trouble with the locals. SARANALAYAM identifies such children and reahabilitates them with concern.
